Introduction text
Schwarz Digits creates the technological foundation for digital sovereignty in Europe. As the IT and digital division of the Schwarz Group, we develop and manage the IT infrastructures for the retail divisions Lidl and Kaufland, as well as Schwarz Production and PreZero. At the same time, we operate as an independent provider in the external market to support companies across Europe in their digital transformation. We bundle our core services in the areas of Cloud, Cyber Security, Data & AI, Communication, and Workspace.
Join us and contribute to digital sovereignty in Europe. With us, you will work at the intersection of agility and security: You will benefit from fast decision-making processes, enjoy genuine creative freedom in your projects, and be able to build upon the stable foundation of the Schwarz Group.,
To future-proof our rapid growth, we are looking for a Engineer for our Scaling Team. In this role, you will act as a technical visionary and innovator. You understand scaling as a combination of advanced automation, modern architecture, and emerging technologies (such as Generative AI & agentic workflows).
You operate with high autonomy, evaluating new technologies and methods, driving paradigm shifts, and building—alongside our teams—the tools and architectures that elevate our entire engineering organization to the next level of productivity.
You work in tandem with our Engineering Productivity Innovator, who identifies the biggest points of friction within teams and accompanies adoption. You provide the technical substance to solve these friction points together.
Your Tasks
- Technology Vision & Innovation: Identify global tech trends early (e.g., AI-assisted engineering, autonomous CI/CD, agentic workflows) and transform them alongside Tech Leads and Architects into concrete scaling strategies (including a 2–3 year technology radar and architectural vision).
- Architecture & Technical Debt: Design modern, decoupled system and platform architectures to sustainably reduce technical debt, creating reference architectures that product teams can adopt and adapt.
- Paradigm Shift Through Automation: Eliminate administrative and technical hurdles by translating manual processes, governance rules, and quality gates into intelligent, automated software systems following the principle "Scaling = Automation." Build "Golden Paths" and automations that significantly reduce cognitive load for product teams.
- Rapid Prototyping & PoCs: Develop lighthouse prototypes and architectural blueprints with pilot teams in tandem to practically demonstrate the potential of new technologies in boosting developer velocity (e.g., reference architectures for the secure, controlled use of AI agents). Ensure smooth handovers so product teams can own and advance these solutions independently.
- Technical Leadership & Enablement: Exemplify engineering excellence, actively mentor teams on new paradigms, act as a sparring partner for Tech Leads and Architects on strategic architectural decisions, and deliver the technical substance for transparent decision-making (e.g., Architecture Decision Records, RFCs).
Your Profile
- Must-Have Skills
- Developer Experience (DevEx) Mindset: Passion for making developers' lives easier, removing administrative barriers, and eliminating friction in software delivery.
- Distributed Systems & Architecture: Deep understanding of scalable architecture patterns (microservices, event-driven systems, Domain-Driven Design) and modern CI/CD governance.
- Cloud Platform Expertise: Hands-on experience building or operating cloud platforms (e.g., Kubernetes, Infrastructure as Code)—ideally in regulated environments with strict security, compliance, and maturity requirements.
- Hands-on Prototyping Mastery: High execution strength with the ability to translate architectural concepts into working code/PoCs within days.
- AI & Emerging Tech Integration: Practical experience evaluating and integrating cutting-edge tools (e.g., AI coding assistants, LLM integrations, agentic workflows). Includes hands-on experience with Python
- Nice-to-Have Skills
- Experience with change management and enablement in engineering organizations of 100+ developers.
- Background in Platform Engineering and Internal Developer Platforms (e.g., Backstage) as a foundation for Golden Paths.
- Experience using engineering metrics (e.g., Lead Time for Change, Change Failure Rate, Deployment Frequency) to guide technical prioritization.
- Active contributions to open-source projects in Developer Experience, Platform Engineering, or AI tooling.
